Participants in Big Mouth Society’s studio ensembles range from less experienced enthusiasts to professional musicians.
Beauteous Excavation Ensemble
Beauteous Excavation Ensemble (BEE) explores an eclectic range of classical, traditional and folk music from around the world. BEE participants also learn improvisation, ensemble-building, and technique refinement. It includes musicians from the Portland community at all levels of experience, with a particular focus on beginning and intermediate levels. From September through May, BEE typically rehearses weekly at Big Mouth Society’s studio, and performs at our Salon and Mainstage events at regular intervals. Directed by Aage Nielsen and Emily Lau.
The Curious Voices
The Curious Voices (TCV) is an adventurous chamber vocal ensemble exploring the rarely performed music of medieval, renaissance, baroque, and living composers. It is made up of advanced amateurs, music school graduates, and current and retired professionals from the Portland community. From September through May, TCV typically rehearses weekly at Big Mouth Society’s studio, and performs at our Salon and Mainstage events at regular intervals. Directed by Emily Lau.
Summer Ensemble extends the fun of music-making and community by bringing together members of BEE and TCV for regular, informal rehearsals during June, July and August at Big Mouth Society’s studio. A new collection of songs is introduced and learned at each rehearsal to flexibly accommodate members’ summer schedules. Directed by Emily Lau.
The Broken Consort
The Broken Consort (TBC) is Big Mouth's resident professional ensemble, assembled by invitation only. Made up of leading professionals from around the country, TBC has presented original programs of chamber music and performance art to enthusiastic audiences around the country since 2010.
